In the first part of this chapter we explored the expressive musical language of emotion. As we learned about Timbre, Dynamics, Pitch, and Rhythm, and how they can be varied for individual notes and across phrases, we experienced how just by learning to “speak” this emotional language, our music-playing becomes more expressive.
Now we will explore some other ways to connect with what lies within us and bring it out to where we can express it, so that our music is not just “more expressive”, but is expressive of what we have inside.
We’ll look at four further forms of musical Expression, and how the language we’ve been learning can be practiced and applied: Active Listening, Movement, Audiation and Singing, and Creativity.
