Conclusion

In this chapter we built on the deeper relationship with the Beat established as a foundation in the previous chapter, and introduced Rhythm Syllables and the corresponding Stick Notation to equip you with a set of building blocks for Rhythm.

If you’ve spent some time with the exercises in this chapter, hopefully you’ve started to experience for yourself how impactful and enlightening having these Rhythm building blocks can be.

Whether your goal is to more easily interpret the rhythms in music you’re learning from traditional notation, to play music by ear, to improvise, to write your own music, or any other musical activity, Rhythm Syllables can help you gain a more accurate, versatile and instinctive ability with everything involving Rhythm in music.

Like all the building blocks covered in this part of the book, it will take some time to gain proficiency with all the possibilities and applications. However if you dedicate some time to practicing with the exercises suggested here, and begin to make use of the building blocks throughout everything you do in music, you’ll quickly find yourself internalising the patterns and able to use them freely, creatively and instinctively.
