In this chapter we introduced Singing as a powerful tool for your musicality and showed you some easy first steps towards confident, reliable and accurate singing.
For many people Singing can seem intimidating, uncomfortable or even scary. But this only demonstrates the deep, biological and psychological connection we all have to our natural first instrument.
When you add Singing to your musical toolkit, you’ll find endless opportunities to use your voice to learn faster and express yourself more easily in music. It doesn’t take long to get to that “basic, everyday” level of Singing which proves so valuable, so I would encourage you to put in a little time over the next couple of weeks to practice the exercises in this chapter, and start using Singing as you continue through the book, both where it’s specifically suggested, and any time you feel the urge to sing something you’re hearing, playing or imagining.
As you gain confidence in your Singing skills, you will probably find yourself automatically starting to hum or sing tunes to yourself during the day, for example when hearing a song you love. Don’t shy away from that! Allow yourself to gradually accept that identity of being “a singer” if it’s naturally starting to emerge, and cultivate it where you can.
Singing can be one of the most rewarding, satisfying and fulfilling musical activities, so learning to sing is a great gift to give yourself, and will pay off throughout your musical life for years to come.
So dive in! Drink some water, be aware of your body, listen as you sing, and enjoy the journey into Singing.
